CHAPTER TWENTY-TW

O

“I don’t know why I had the file on Mary White in the Unsolveds,” Jeb said. “For that matter, I don’t know why I’ve got Leroy Langers in there either. We couldn’t determine a cause of death, but he weren’t no spring chicken. If I’m remembering right, he was seventy, seventy-one, and had some health problems. Guess I stuck him in there because we couldn’t say for sure what killed him, but Mary? As far as I can remember, I believed Alan’s story.”

He stopped for a moment, a troubled look on his transparent face.

“But since I can’t remember who killed me…”

As his voice trailed off, Aunt Vivian patted his hand. Or I should say, she patted the table through his hand. Guess it’s the thought that counts.

“Oh, Jeb, I wish I could give you a hug,” she said.

That got a grin and a wink.

“I’d like to give you a hug, too, Viv. Maybe a big kiss.”

“Now hush, Jeb!” She giggled, and Aunt Lucy rolled her eyes.

We’d been seated around the kitchen table eating cheese omelets and toast and drinking coffee when Jeb and Bullet materialized. Literally. One moment they weren’t there and the next they were. I wasn’t sure I’d ever get used to that, but if Lucy and Vivian were any example, I would. When they saw Jeb, big smiles broke out on their faces, and for the next fifteen minutes, the three of them had to catch up on what was going on in their lives—and Jeb’s death. They seemed glad to see Bullet, too, and he seemed glad to see them, although it was obvious he was disappointed he couldn’t get a bite of their toast.

I’d finally interrupted the social call by bringing up the Unsolved folder and its contents.

“There is something about the Ali Hall one that bothers me,” Jeb continued. “Seems like it always did.”

“That was fifteen years ago,” I said. “What are the odds that something new would pop up on a case that old?”

Jeb shrugged. “Dunno. Maybe it bothers me because I was one of the responding officers. I still remember how innocent she looked layin’ there all crumpled up on the riverbank, her head all bloody like that. She was too young to have that happen to her.”

I thought of something and checked the sub-folder listing.

“This is interesting.” I pointed to the date. “At least one of the files was modified not too long before you died.”

I opened the folder and scanned the contents. Based on the dates, the original police report and the autopsy report hadn’t been modified, but Jeb’s notes had been. I double-clicked to open it. Jeb leaned over my shoulder to check the file as I scrolled through it. I could see just a hint of his reflection in the laptop screen, and I thought I deserved a medal for not shuddering.

“Ah. I remember now what I changed. Her dad died a few months before I did, and her mom sold their place in the country and moved to a little house in town.
